Why is insulator testing so important?
Failures caused by defective insulators are costly and, more importantly, extremely dangerous for personnel working nearby. Live-line work requires insulators to be in perfect condition to ensure the safety of lineworkers operating under live conditions (TST – Travaux Sous Tension). The quality of an insulator is a key factor in the reliability and durability of an electrical installation.
The PID-COMPOSITE insulator tester allows for the evaluation and diagnosis of composite insulators. This lightweight, revolutionary tool is easy to use and capable of detecting faults and hazardous conditions on energized suspended insulators, substation circuit breakers, bushings, and surge arresters. It represents a major breakthrough in insulator maintenance: it measures the electric field along insulators, records the field data, and identifies any conductive insulation defects. It works on composite insulators at all voltage levels.
POSITRON® testers are reliable and certified by various utility companies worldwide, including references such as EDF and RTE. They are the only devices capable of detecting defects in composite insulators.
Each tester is delivered in a case containing:
- 1 PID-COMPOSITE tester
- 1 long-range Bluetooth connector (100m)
- 1 tablet PC with its analysis and mapping software
- Used for polymer or composite insulation NCI
- Available in 50Hz or 60Hz versions
- Voltage range: 25kV to 1000kV
- Adjustable shoe for different insulation diameters from 10.9 to 17cm (4.3'' to 6.7'')
- Ideal for insulators with more than 10 cups
- Records faults up to 15.000 readings
- Rechargeable battery
- Microelectronic technology: test results are acquirred and stored by an integrated microprocessor;
This technology allows readings to be downloaded to any laptop for graphical display, analysis and long-term comparison.
- Compatible with standard field equipment: all units include a universal mounting bracket compatible with industry-standard high-voltage booms.
- Lightweight and durable: POSITRON insulator testers are lightweight (less than 1.6kg), durable and designed to withstand the specific conditions.
The testers are supplied in a robust carrying case for maximum portability and durability.
The steps for implementing:
1. The operator positions himself and presses the push-button on the probe and recorder;
2. The teser is placed on the chain a few insulating discs before the end of the insulator chain;
3. The tester is returned to the start of the chain and held still for at least 10 seconds until a long "beep" is heard;
4. The tester is slid to the end of the chain line, then returns to the starting point.
The buzzer sound each time a playback is made on each insulator disc.
5. The tester is removed from the chain, ensuring that a continuous sound is audible to indicate that the analysis has been successful.
By pressing the push button, the operator sends the data, which is immediately visibile on the PC screen and stored in the database.
