Cold Galvanizing: Long-Lasting Corrosion Protection for Steel
Cold galvanizing is an anti-corrosion protection process that consists of applying a zinc-rich coating directly onto steel using a brush, roller, or spray gun, without heating or immersion in molten zinc. It provides long-term protection for metal structures against rust and is the preferred solution for treating, repairing, or touching up steel directly on site. What Is Cold Galvanizing?
Cold galvanizing refers to the application of a highly zinc-loaded coating that provides active anti-corrosion protection for steel. Unlike standard anti-rust paint, which acts as a passive barrier, zinc behaves as a sacrificial anode: it corrodes instead of the steel and therefore protects the underlying metal, even if the coating becomes scratched.
Cold Galvanizing or Hot-Dip Galvanizing?
Hot-dip galvanizing requires immersing the component in molten zinc at approximately 450°C in a workshop environment, making it impossible for already installed structures. Cold galvanizing, on the other hand, is applied directly on site at ambient temperature. It is ideal for treating new components that are difficult to move, but above all for repairing damaged hot-dip galvanizing: weld areas, cuts, impact damage, or worn sections can be easily touched up without dismantling.
The Principle of Active Cathodic Protection
This is what distinguishes a true cold galvanizing coating from conventional paint. The zinc layer creates cathodic protection: as long as zinc remains in contact with the steel, corrosion attacks the zinc first. GALVAGRID goes even further by bonding with the substrate to form a uniform coating, ensuring continuous long-term corrosion protection.

Approved and adopted by NATO forces as early as the 1960s, this technology provides active cathodic protection and bonds with the metal for long-lasting performance.
An Alternative to Cold Galvanizing Spray Paints
Traditional cold galvanizing sprays offer limited coverage, uneven coating thickness, and low efficiency on large surfaces. GALVAGRID is available in containers (0.5 kg and 2 kg) and in kits with solvent, allowing controlled application, improved coverage, and a significantly lower cost per square meter for maintenance projects. It is the professional alternative to cold galvanizing spray cans.
Anti-Corrosion Coating Up to C5-H Category
GALVAGRID provides anti-corrosion protection up to C5-H corrosivity category according to ISO 12944, covering the most severe environments: industrial areas with high humidity, saline atmospheres, marine, and offshore environments. This level of performance makes it an anti-corrosion coating perfectly suited for exposed infrastructures and strategic metal structures.
On Which Surfaces Can This Anti-Corrosion Treatment Be Applied?
GALVAGRID can be applied to a wide variety of steel substrates: galvanized or metallized steel requiring touch-up, new bare steel requiring protection, and older structures undergoing renovation. It is particularly suitable for protecting steel frameworks, pylons, guardrails, tanks, substations and electrical equipment, as well as any structure exposed to atmospheric or marine corrosion. This anti-corrosion treatment restores active protection to components whose original galvanizing has reached the end of its service life.
How to Apply GALVAGRID RUST-ANODE PRIMER?
The effectiveness of cold galvanizing depends primarily on proper surface preparation. The surface must be clean, dry, and free from loose rust, grease, and dust (degreasing and light surface preparation are recommended). GALVAGRID can then be applied using a brush, roller, or spray gun, and may be diluted with the solvent supplied in the kit depending on the application method. To achieve optimal anti-corrosion performance, follow the recommended number of coats and drying times indicated in the product technical data sheet.
